Another Dimension with Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental grasses are grown as ornamental plants. Ornamental grass is used in landscape design the way you might use flowers, shrubs or trees. Ornamental grasses come in many different sizes, shapes and colors. The grasses can be brown, bluish, red, green, cream, and variegated. Almost all ornamental grasses are perennials, coming up in spring from the roots and go dormant in fall or winter. Some ornamental grasses species can be grown from seed.

Maiden Grass

  • Northern Sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) is an ornamental grass that grows 24″-36″ high in loose clumps of green foliage.
  • A cool-season ornamental grass that can be grown in zones 4-8 and is effective for deer control is Blue Oat grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens).
  • Plume grass (Erianthus ravennae) is suitable for zones 4-9.
  • A tall drought-tolerant ornamental grass, Maidengrass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’) is a fine choice in zones 5-9 for as it reaches as much as 7’ in height, with a bit smaller spread.
  • Ornamental grass that reaches only about 1′ in height is Lilyturf and can be grown in zones 4-10.
  • Another short ornamental grass reaching about 1’ x 1’, and suitable for zones 4-8 is Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’). This clumping, drought-tolerant ornamental grass is very popular due to the blue color of its foliage, which can beautifully complement any surrounding plants you may have with silvery foliage, such as lamb’s ears.

Replacing lawn grass with a combination of ornamental grass and mulch can reduce yard maintenance requirements. If you mix ornamental grass with shrubs, trees and flowers or let it stand alone, you’ll want to apply mulch around ornamental grass. Ornamental grass, as you can see, is not meant to be mowed, is not meant to be uniform, not meant to be walked upon. These grasses can add wonderful dimension and texture to your garden!
